Soccer Rules & Regulations

These rules & regulations are modified to the basic rules of soccer by WVYSA from FIFA rules. 

Under Age 8 (U8) League - General guidelines for play

  • Play will occur on two side by side fields simultaneously 
  • Fields are approximately 30m long x 18m wide 
  • 4 or 5 players from each team at a time on each field
  • Play with size 3 ball
  • No goal keepers, players can’t use their hands
  • Defending players must stay 3 yards away from the goal, once the ball is played closer to the goal, players can go closer to the goal to defend 
  • No players standing inside of the goal (no undercover goal keepers)
  • Offside rule not enforced
  • All fouls (hand balls, tripping, etc.) result in direct free kicks
  • Opposing team players must stay 4 yards from the ball on all free kicks
  • Player free kicking may not touch the ball a second time until another player has touched the ball
  • Corner kicks, goal kicks, and throw-ins will not be used. A coach will act as game leader and return dead (out of bounce) balls back into the game
  • Slide tackles not allowed
  • Coaches may substitute players on any dead ball, including corner kicks Suggestion: substitutions at quarter breaks only are encouraged
  • Matches will have four 7 minutes quarters, with 2 minute between quarters and a 5 minutes half-time
  • Matches are running time, unless both coaches agree to additional time in case of injury or other reason
  • Coaches should try to maintain equal playing time for all players

Under Age 11 (U11) League - General guidelines for play

    • 8 to 10 players from each team on the field at a time, including goal keeper Number of players to be determined by the coaches at pre-match
    • Play with size 4 ball
    • Matches will have two 25 minutes halves, with 10 minutes half-time 
    • Coaches may substitute players on dead balls with the referee’s permission
    • Matches are running time with additional time at the referee’s discretion.  Time will be kept by the referee or any person they designate
    • 6 seconds ball holding rule against goalkeepers will not be enforced
    • Corner kicks, goal kicks, and throw-ins will be taught and used
    • Offside rule will be taught and enforced, and will result in a turnover.  Refs will be encouraged to teach players upon first violation, then enforce on second violation.
    • Throw-in violations will be enforced, and will result in a turnover
    • Heading the ball is allowed and will be taught by coaches
    • Slide tackles are not allowed
    • Coaches should strive to maintain equal playing time for all players
